8 en SAFETY RULES Fuel Handling W ARNING: Gasoline is an extremel y flammable fuel. Use extreme caution when handling gasoline or fuel mix. Do not smoke or bring any fire or flame near the fuel or the chainsaw (Fig. 7). • T o reduce the risk of fire and b urn injury , handle fuel with care.
9 en SAFETY RULES • As an additional saf ety precaution, apply the chain brake prior to setting down the sa w . • Only use the chain saw in w ell-ventilated places , do not opera- te the chain saw in e xplosive or flammable atmospheres or in closed environments (Fig.
10 en SAFETY RULES • Do not twist the saw as the bar is withdr awn from an undercut when buc king. A v oid Pull-In: • Alwa ys begin cutting with the engine at full speed and the saw housing against wood. • Use wedges made of plastic or wood. Ne ver use metal to hold the cut open.

14 en SAFETY RULES • Ne ver touch the chain or attempt to service the saw while the engine is running. • Ne ver use fuel f or cleaning operations. • K eep the chain saw in a dry place, off the ground with the chain guard on and the tanks empty .
15 en ASSEMBL Y Assembling the Bar and Chain W ARNING: Check the chain tension frequently when operating the chain saw . Never touch or adjust the chain while the engine is running. The saw chain is very sharp, alwa ys wear protective glo ves when performing maintenance to the c hain.
16 en ASSEMBL Y 13. Chain is correctly tensioned when there is no slack on the underside of the guide bar , the chain is snug, but it can be turned by hand without binding, see Fig. 28. Ensure that the chain brak e is not set. NO TE: If chain is too tight, it will not rotate.
17 en OPERA TION Chain T ension W ARNING: Never touch or adjust the c hain while the motor is running. The saw chain is very sharp, al ways wear protective glo ves when performing maintenance to the chain. 1. Stop the engine before setting the chain tension.
18 en OPERA TION Bucking Spike W ARNING: Y our chain saw may be fitted with an optional buc king spike (G, Fig. 34). The buc king spike is very sharp and can cause injury .
19 en OPERA TION NO TE: 2-Cycle Engine Oil contains a fuel stabilizer and will sta y fresh up to 30 da ys. DO NO T mix quantities larger than usable in a 30 da y period. A 2-cycle oil containing a fuel stabilizer is recommended. Fuel Mixture 2-Cycle Engine Oil (25:1) 4% Gasoline Oil 1 Gallon (US) .
20 en OPERA TION 1. Fill the oil tank e very time engine is fueled. Chain saw should use appro ximately one tank of oil per tank of fuel. 2. The automatic oil pump is a positive displacement pump operated through gears driven off the clutch drum assembly .
21 en OPERA TION W ork Area Precautions W ARNING: Cut onl y wood or materials made fr om wood. Do not cut metal, plastics, masonry , or non-wood b uilding materials.
22 en OPERA TION • Mov e the on/off s witch (A) to the star t position “I”. • Pull the choke le ver (B) to the full choke (fully e xtended position or closed position 1, Fig.47 ). The half-throttle is automatically set when choke le ver is set at Full Choke .
53 23 en OPERA TION Difficult Starting (or star ting a flooded engine) The engine ma y be flooded with too much fuel if it has not star ted after 10 pulls. Flooded engines can be cleared of excess fuel b y f ollowing the warm engine star ting procedure listed abov e.
24 en OPERA TION Chain Brake Operation Refer to Safety-Chain Brake Section bef ore use. The chain brak e Run P osition (A, Fig. 55) and Brake P osition (B) are illustrated below . The chain brak e operating condition should be check ed prior to each use as f ollows: 1.
25 en OPERA TION W ARNING: Periodicall y glance at the top of the tree during the backcut to assure the tree is going to fall in the desired direction.
26 en OPERA TION DO NO T cut down a partially fallen tree with your sa w . Be e xtremely cautious with par tially f allen trees that may be poorly suppor ted. When a tree doesn’t f all completely , set the saw aside and pull down the tree with a cab le winch, bloc k and tackle , or tractor .
27 en OPERA TION Logs Under Stress (Fig. 66-67) Make the first b ucking cut (F) 1/3 of the wa y through the log and finish with a 2/3 cut (G) on the opposite side. As the log is being cut, it will tend to bend. The saw can become pinched or hung in the log if you mak e the first cut deeper than 1/3 of the diameter of the log.
28 en OPERA TION Limbing Operation (Fig. 72-73) • Alwa ys limb a tree after it is cut down. Only then can limbing be done saf ely and properly . • Leav e the larger limbs underneath the felled tree to suppor t the tree as you w ork. • Star t at the base of the f elled tree and work toward the top , cut- ting branches and limbs.

30 en MAINTENANCE Chain Maintenance Use only Dual Raker lo w-kickbac k chain on this saw . This f ast-cutting chain will provide kickbac k reduction when properly maintained. F or smooth and fast cutting, r aker chain needs to be maintained properly .

32 en MAINTENANCE Carburetor Adjustment Bef ore adjusting the carburetor , clean the star ter cov er vents as shown in Fig. 87, and air filter as sho wn in Fig. 88, refer to Operation-Star ting Unit and Maintenance-Air Filter Sections f or details. Allow the engine to warm up pr ior to carb uretor adjust- ment.
33 en MAINTENANCE Starter Unit Use a brush to keep the cooling v ents of the star ter assembly free and clean of debris (Fig. 92). W ARNING: The coil spring is under tension and could fly apart causing serious injuries. Never try to disassembly or modify it.
