4 23. POLARIZED PLUGS. T o reduce the risk of electric shock, this equipment has a polarized plug (one blade is wider than the other). This plug will fit in a polarized outlet only one wa y . If the plug does not fit fully in the outlet, re verse the plug.
5 4. Do not perform an y operation freehand. The workpiece m ust be secured firmly against the turn base and guide fence with a vise during all operations. Never use your hand to secure the w orkpiece . 5. Never reach ar ound saw blade. 6. T urn off tool and wait for saw blade to stop before mo ving workpiece or chang- ing settings.
6 28. Alwa ys use accessories recommended in this manual. Use of improper accessories such as abrasive wheels may cause an injury . 29. NEVER hold workpiece on right side of blade with left hand or vice versa. This is called cross-armed cutting and e xposes user to risk of SERIOUS PERSONAL INJUR Y as shown in the figure.
7 INST ALLA TION Bench mounting When the tool is shipped, the handle is lock ed in the lowered position by the stopper pin. Release the stopper pin b y lower- ing the handle slightly and pulling the stopper pin. This tool should be bolted with two bolts to a le vel and stab le surf ace using the bolt holes provided in the tool’ s base.
8 If the see-through blade guard becomes dirty , or sawdust adheres to it in such a wa y that the blade is no longer easily visible , unplug the saw and clean the guard carefully with a damp cloth. Do not use solvents or an y petroleum-based cleaners on the plastic guard.
9 Maintaining maximum cutting capacity This tool is fa ctor y adjusted to provide the maximum cutting capacity f or a 255 mm (10 ” ) saw blade . When installing a new b lade, alwa ys check the lo wer limit position of the blade and if necessary , adjust it as follo ws: First, unplug the tool.
10 Adjusting the bevel angle T o adjust the bev el angle, loosen the lev er at the rear of the tool counterclockwise . Push the handle to the left to tilt the saw b lade until the pointer points to the desired angle on the be vel scale. Then tighten the le ver clockwise firmly to secure the arm.
11 • F or your saf ety , this tool is equipped with a lock-off button which pre vents the tool from unintended starting. NEVER use the tool if it runs when you simply pull the s witch tr igger without pressing the lock-off b utton. Return tool to a Makita ser vice center for proper repairs BEFORE fur ther usage.
12 T o remove the b lade, use the sock et wrench to loosen the he x bolt holding the center cover b y tur ning it counterclock- wise. Raise the b lade guard and center cover . Press the shaft lock to loc k the spindle and use the socket wrench to loosen the he x bolt clockwise.
13 Return the blade guard and center cov er to its or iginal posi- tion. Then tighten the he x bolt clockwise to secure the center cov er . Lower the handle to mak e sure that the blade guard mov es properly . Make sure shaft lock has released spindle bef ore making cut.
14 CA UTION: • When cutting long workpieces, use suppor ts that are as high as the top surf ace lev el of the tur n base. Do not rely solely on the vertical vise and/or hor izontal vise to secure the workpiece. Thin material tends to sag. Suppor t wor kpiece ov er its entire length to av oid blade pinch and possib le KICKBA CK.
15 When cutting long workpieces, use the holder-rod assemb ly (optional accessor y). It consists of two holder assemb lies and two rods 12. CA UTION: • Alwa ys suppor t long workpieces lev el with the top surf ace of the tur n base for accurate cuts and to pre vent dangerous loss of control of the tool.
16 CA UTION: • Fir mly tighten the clamp screw on the turn base clockwise so that the carriage will not mov e during operation. Insufficient tightening ma y cause unexpected kickbac k of the blade.
17 4. Bevel cut Loosen the le ver and tilt the saw b lade to set the bev el angle (Refer to the pre viously cov ered “ Adjusting the bev el angle ” ). Be sure to retighten the le ver firmly to secure the selected be vel angle saf ely . Secure the work- piece with a vise.
18 6. Cutting cro wn and cove moldings Crown and co ve moldings can be cut on a compound miter saw with the moldings laid flat on the turn base. There are two common types of crown moldings and one type of cov e moldings; 52/38 ° wall angle crown molding, 45 ° wall angle cro wn molding and 45 ° wall angle co ve molding.
19 Example: In the case of cutting 52/38 ° type crown molding f or position (1) in Fig. A: • Tilt and secure be vel angle setting to 33.9 ° LEFT . • Adjust and secure miter angle setting to 31.

22 7. Cutting aluminum ex trusion When securing aluminum e xtr usions, use spacer b locks or pieces of scrap as shown in the figure to pre v ent def or mation of the aluminum. Use a cutting lubricant when cutting the aluminum e xtrusion to prev ent build-up of the aluminum material on the blade.
23 CA UTION: • Use screws to attach the wood f acing to the guide f ence. The screws should be installed so that the scre w heads are below the surf ace of the wood f acing. • When the wood f acing is attached, do not tur n the tur n base with the handle lowered.
24 CA UTION: • Be sure to return the stopper plate to the or iginal position when perf or ming other than groov e cutting. Carrying tool Make sure that the tool is unplugged. Secure the b lade at 0 ° be vel angle and the turn base at r ight miter angle fully .
25 1. Miter angle Push the carriage toward the guide f ence and tighten the clamp screw on the turn base to secure the carriage. Loosen the clamp screw on the guide f ence which secures the turn base. T urn the tur n base so that the pointer points to 0 ° on the miter scale.
26 Tu r n t h e 0 ° bev el angle adjusting bolt on the right side of the arm two or three rev olutions counter- clockwise to tilt the b lade to the right. Carefully square the side of the blade with the top surf ace of the tur n base using the tr iangular rule, tr y-square, etc.
27 Replacing carbon brushes Remov e and check the carbon brushes regularly . Replace when they we ar down to the limit mark. Keep the carbon brushes clean and free to slip in the holders. Both carbon brushes should be replaced at the same time. Use only iden- tical carbon brushes.
